If this happens to you, remove tarnish using a non-abrasive silver polish and soft cloth and gently rub your sterling silver. Then use a soft brush or toothbrush and wash in warm, sudsy water, ensuring all polish is removed and carefully dry. This will remove the tarnish and dullness, keeping your sterling silver like new.
